tokyo, 2024

Whoops, been a minute.

I’ve been home for a little over a week eight months and still miss Japan, obviously. One thing I don’t miss is culling photos. Love taking em, even love editing sometimes (though I tend to only do minor tweaks to exposure and light cropping). Culling remains a huge pain in the ass though.

Quiet mornings in Minata.

I have awful vision and need a large display to be able to effectively, uh, see things. I’m also a chronically light packer when I travel–a holdover from my touring days. This led to me traveling with just my 11″ iPad for photo culling and editing. Unfortunately, it’s just a bit too small for me to feel like I can effectively judge the photos I take as I go over them post-import.

Of course, the rear LCD panels on cameras are all way too small to make culling decisions as I shoot (or even check if I pulled focus cleanly). All this is to say: I finally caved and picked up an M4 Macbook Pro. So far, it’s been pretty great and the extra $150 for the glare-eliminating nano-texture panel is absolutely worth it. Best non-OLED display I’ve seen.

What do you use to cull photos? Any software solutions out there that streamline the process a bit?
